First Class with Distinction: What CGPA is Required?

The Prestige of "First Class with Distinction"

When you graduate from a university in India (especially in engineering or sciences), your final degree certificate won't just have a CGPA printed on it. It will assign you a "Class" ranking.

The absolute highest ranking you can achieve is First Class with Distinction (sometimes called First Division with Distinction).

Having this phrase printed on your degree is a massive badge of honor. It proves to employers, government agencies, and foreign universities that you were among the academic elite of your batch. But what exact CGPA is required to earn it?

The Standard Cutoffs

Unlike the US grading system, Indian universities generally standardize their degree classifications into three major buckets:
  • First Class with Distinction: Usually requires a CGPA of 7.5 or 8.0 and above (depending on the university), equivalent to 70% or 75%+.
  • First Class: Usually requires a CGPA between 6.5 and 7.49 (equivalent to 60% to 69%).
  • Second Class: Usually requires a CGPA between 5.5 and 6.49 (equivalent to 50% to 59%).
  • University-Specific Variations

While the buckets are standard, the exact math changes depending on your university's official rules.
  • VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University): VTU officially awards First Class with Distinction to any student who achieves a 70% or higher across their degree. Using VTU's conversion formula, you need roughly a 7.75 CGPA to hit this mark.
  • Anna University: Anna University is much stricter. They require an 8.5 CGPA or higher, and* you must pass all subjects in your first attempt (zero history of arrears/backlogs) to receive Distinction.
  • Mumbai University: MU awards Distinction to students who score above 70%. You must use MU's specific tiered conversion formula to see if your CGPA matches that 70% threshold.

    Why Does Distinction Matter?

For many private IT jobs, a standard "First Class" (60% / 6.5 CGPA) is perfectly fine to get an interview. However, Distinction matters heavily in three specific areas:
  • PSUs and Government Jobs: Top Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like ISRO, DRDO, or BHEL often have strict cutoffs for technical roles, sometimes requiring Distinction to even sit for the exam.
  • Foreign Master's Programs: If you are applying for an MS in Germany, the US, or the UK, admissions committees look highly upon the "First Class with Distinction" tag as it maps perfectly to their "Cum Laude" or "Top 10%" requirements.
  • Core Engineering Jobs: Companies like Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, and L&T prefer candidates with Distinction because it proves high technical consistency across 4 years.
  • The Backlog Penalty

Be extremely careful: At many strict universities (like Anna University or select NITs), you are instantly disqualified from receiving "First Class with Distinction" if you have ever had a backlog, even if you cleared it later and your final CGPA is a 9.0.

If you are aiming for Distinction, your goal is not just high marks—your goal is zero failures.
