GPA for Nursing School 2026: BSN, ADN & MSN Requirements

What GPA Do You Need for Nursing School in 2026?

Nursing school admissions have become increasingly competitive. With a nationwide nursing shortage driving more applicants to nursing programs, understanding exactly what GPA you need — and which GPA matters most — is critical to your application strategy.

The Short Answer: It Depends on the Program

There is no single "nursing school GPA requirement." The benchmark varies dramatically by program type:

  • Top BSN programs (Johns Hopkins, UPenn, UCSF): 3.5–3.7+ average GPA among admitted students
  • Competitive state university BSN programs: 3.0–3.5 minimum, 3.3–3.5 average
  • Standard BSN programs: 2.5–3.0 minimum GPA
  • ADN (Associate Degree) programs: 2.0–2.5 minimum, though competitive spots often go to 3.0+ applicants
  • MSN / NP programs: 3.0 minimum undergraduate GPA at most programs, 3.4+ competitive
  • The Prerequisite GPA Problem

Here is something many pre-nursing students miss: your science prerequisite GPA often matters more than your overall GPA. Most nursing programs evaluate the following courses separately:

  • Anatomy & Physiology I and II
  • Microbiology
  • General Chemistry
  • Nutrition
  • Statistics
  • Human Growth and Development
  • A nursing school admissions committee would rather see a 3.2 overall GPA with straight A's in all science prerequisites than a 3.7 overall GPA with B's and C's in Anatomy. If you're in your first year, prioritize getting A's in these courses above all else.

    How NursingCAS Calculates Your GPA

NursingCAS (the centralized application service used by hundreds of nursing programs) recalculates your GPA from scratch. It does NOT use the GPA on your transcript. Key rules:

  • All college coursework is included — even transfer credits and courses from schools you didn't graduate from
  • Quarter hours are converted to semester hours (1 quarter = 0.667 semesters)
  • Pass/Fail courses are excluded
  • Withdrawal (W) grades don't affect GPA
  • Withdrawal Failing (WF) grades count as an F
  • This means your NursingCAS GPA might be different from your school's GPA. Always calculate your NursingCAS GPA yourself using our Nursing GPA Calculator before submitting applications.

Strategies to Improve Your Nursing GPA

If your GPA is below 2.5: Focus entirely on ADN (community college) programs first. Complete your associate degree, work as an RN for 1–2 years, then apply to RN-to-BSN bridge programs. This two-step path gets you into nursing faster than trying to boost a low GPA at a 4-year university.

If your GPA is 2.5–3.0: You're competitive at standard BSN programs. Make sure all your science prerequisites have A's or B's. Consider retaking any science course where you earned a C. Use our Target GPA Calculator to see exactly what grades you need this semester to reach your target.

If your GPA is 3.0–3.4: You're in a good position. Focus your energy on TEAS/ATI test prep, recommendation letters from science faculty, and gaining clinical volunteer hours (100+ hours stands out significantly).

If your GPA is 3.5+: Apply broadly including highly competitive programs. Your GPA is not a limiting factor. Distinguish yourself with research experience, medical mission trips, or leadership in healthcare-adjacent roles.

Does the TEAS Score Matter More Than GPA?

For many nursing programs, yes. The ATI TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) score is weighted heavily — sometimes equally or more than GPA in holistic review. A score above 80th percentile significantly strengthens a below-average GPA application. Prepare seriously for the TEAS even if your GPA is strong.

    The Bottom Line

A nursing school GPA of 3.0+ is considered competitive at most programs. A 3.5+ puts you in contention for top-ranked programs. But don't neglect your science prerequisite GPA — it's often the real deciding factor that separates waitlisted candidates from admitted students.
