SGPA to CGPA Conversion: Step-by-Step Guide

SGPA vs. CGPA: What is the Difference?

When your semester results are published, the scorecard can be incredibly confusing. You will likely see two different numbers: your SGPA and your CGPA.

If you want to know if you qualify for campus placements or honors graduation, you must understand how these two numbers interact.

What is SGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is a temporary metric. It only measures your academic performance for one single semester.

If you took 5 subjects in Semester 3, your SGPA is the weighted average of just those 5 subjects. Once Semester 3 is over, that specific SGPA is locked in history.

What is CGPA?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is your permanent academic identity. It measures your overall performance across all completed semesters combined. When companies ask for your grade on a resume, they are asking for your CGPA.

How to Calculate CGPA from SGPA

A massive mistake students make is simply adding up their SGPAs and dividing by the number of semesters.

WRONG METHOD:

  • Semester 1 SGPA = 8.0
  • Semester 2 SGPA = 9.0
  • Wrong CGPA calculation = (8.0 + 9.0) / 2 = 8.5
  • Why is this wrong? Because it ignores credits. Semester 2 might have had heavy 4-credit lab courses, while Semester 1 had easy 2-credit electives. To find your true CGPA, you must do a weighted calculation.

CORRECT METHOD: To calculate your CGPA, you need two things from every semester:

  • The SGPA
  • The total credits attempted in that semester
  • Formula: CGPA = ( (SGPA₁ × Credits₁) + (SGPA₂ × Credits₂) + ... ) / Total Credits Attempted

    Example:

  • Semester 1: SGPA of 8.0 with 20 credits. Total Points = 160.
  • Semester 2: SGPA of 9.0 with 25 credits. Total Points = 225.
  • Total Points = 385. Total Credits = 45.
  • True CGPA = 385 / 45 = 8.55
  • The Quick Way to Calculate

Doing this math manually across 8 semesters of an engineering degree is tedious and prone to errors.

Instead, use our free SGPA to CGPA Calculator. You simply type in your SGPA and credits for each semester, and our engine will instantly calculate your true, official CGPA.

Why Does This Matter for Placements?

Most top IT companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, FAANG) have strict CGPA cutoffs—usually a 7.0 or 7.5 minimum to sit for the interview.

If you are in Semester 6 and your CGPA is a 6.8, you need to know exactly what SGPA you must score in Semester 7 to cross the 7.0 threshold. Use our Target CGPA Calculator to reverse-engineer your required SGPA so you don't miss out on placement season!
