GPA Without Credit Hours — How It Works

When all classes carry equal weight, GPA is simply the average of your grade points. No multiplication by credit hours needed.

The Formula:

GPA = (Sum of all Grade Points) ÷ (Number of Graded Classes)

Math: A = 4.0

English: B+ = 3.3

Science: A- = 3.7

History: B = 3.0

Art: A = 4.0

GPA = (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 4.0) ÷ 5 = 3.60

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate GPA without credit hours?

When all classes are equal weight (no credit hours), GPA = Sum of grade points ÷ Number of classes. Convert each letter grade: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0 (with plus/minus variants). Add them up and divide by the number of graded classes.

Is GPA without credit hours accurate?

Yes, for schools that don't use credit hours. Middle school and some high schools calculate GPA as a simple average of all grades. For colleges, credit-hour-weighted GPA is standard because a 4-credit class should count more than a 1-credit elective.

What grades are excluded from GPA?

W (Withdrawal), P (Pass), and I (Incomplete) grades are excluded from GPA calculations at most schools. An F in a graded class is included as 0.0. Our calculator automatically skips W and P grades.

When should I use a no-credit GPA calculator?

Use this calculator if you're in middle school (where classes have equal weight), if your high school uses a simple average system, or if you simply don't know your credit hours and just want a quick estimate.

Does this work for high school GPA?

Yes. Many high schools calculate GPA as a simple grade average without credit hours — especially for courses that are all the same number of credits. If your school uses different credit values per class, use our High School GPA Calculator for a more accurate result.
