How to Convert Marks to CGPA

In the Indian education system, exams are typically graded based on Marks Obtained out of Maximum Marks. To compare scores globally or apply to higher education, you often need to convert these marks into a Percentage or a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

The calculation requires two simple steps:

  1. Calculate your Percentage: Divide your Marks Obtained by the Maximum Marks, then multiply by 100.
  2. Convert to CGPA: Divide that percentage by your board or university's specific multiplier.

The Standard 10-Point Scale (Universities)

Most engineering and degree universities in India (like VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, JNTU, and NITs/IITs) use a standard 10-point scale where the multiplier is exactly 10. In this system: CGPA = Percentage / 10. This calculator automates that conversion for your entire semester or degree marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate percentage from 500 marks?

If you received 450 out of 500 marks, you divide 450 by 500 (which is 0.90) and multiply by 100. Your percentage is 90%.

Is 90% a 9.0 CGPA?

Yes, in the standard Indian university 10-point scale, 90% equates to a 9.0 CGPA. Some specific universities may use a modified formula (e.g. Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) * 10), but a straight division by 10 is the most widely accepted standard for college marks.

Can my CGPA go above 10.0?

No. In the Indian college system, the maximum possible CGPA is 10.0. If you score 100% marks, your CGPA is exactly 10.0.
