Frequently Asked Questions

CAP (Cumulative Average Point) is the term used by NUS, while GPA (Grade Point Average) is used by NTU. Both are mathematically identical — they are calculated on a 5.0 scale where an A+ or A grade awards 5.0 points, an A- awards 4.5 points, and so on. Your final CAP/GPA determines your degree classification (e.g., First Class Honours, Second Upper).
The S/U option allows students to declare a module as Pass/Fail instead of receiving a letter grade. If you score a C grade or better and exercise the 'S' option, you earn the module credits but the grade is completely excluded from your CAP/GPA calculation. If you get a D+, D, or F and exercise the 'U' option, you receive zero credits and the grade is also excluded. This is a strategic tool to protect your CAP from poor grades in non-core modules.
For both NUS and NTU, you need a final CAP / cGPA of 4.50 or higher to be awarded Honours (Highest Distinction) or First Class Honours. For Honours (Distinction) or Second Class Upper, you need a CAP of 4.00 to 4.49. Second Class Lower requires 3.50 to 3.99, and a standard Honours degree requires 3.00 to 3.49.
At NUS, fresh freshmen are typically given 32 MCs (usually 8 modules) of S/U options for their entire degree, with up to 12 MCs (3 modules) that can be carried forward past the first year. At NTU, students are given a similar quota of S/U options, usually up to 12 AUs for their entire candidature. S/U can generally only be used for Level 1000 modules or modules without prerequisites.
In terms of CAP/GPA calculation, both A+ and A give you exactly 5.0 points. Therefore, getting an A+ does not pull your average above 5.0. However, an A+ is recorded on your official academic transcript, which can be advantageous when applying for highly competitive scholarships, graduate programs, or prestigious academic awards.
