Frequently Asked Questions

Under Singapore's current PSLE scoring system (introduced in 2021), each of the four subjects — English, Mathematics, Science, and Mother Tongue — is graded using Achievement Levels (AL) from AL1 (best) to AL8 (worst). The four individual AL scores are added together to form a total PSLE score ranging from 4 (all AL1, perfect) to 32 (all AL8, lowest). A lower total score is better and determines which secondary schools a student can apply to during the School Choice Exercise.
A PSLE score of 4–8 is exceptional and gives access to elite schools like Raffles Institution, Nanyang Girls' High, and integrated programme (IP) schools. A score of 9–12 is strong and competitive for popular government schools. A score of 13–16 is average and provides access to most mainstream secondary schools. Scores of 17–20 qualify for Normal (Academic) stream and above 20 opens Normal (Technical) options. The average PSLE score nationally hovers around 13–16.
Your PSLE Posting Group determines which secondary school stream and type of secondary school you can apply to. Posting Group 1 includes Express and Integrated Programme (IP) schools — typically for students with total PSLE scores of about 4–20. Posting Group 2 covers Normal (Academic) — roughly scores 15–25. Posting Group 3 covers Normal (Technical) — roughly scores 18–30. The exact posting group boundaries are not fixed — they depend on the entire national cohort's performance each year.
Foundation level subjects are assessed differently from Standard level. Foundation subjects are graded on an AL scale that reflects the lower difficulty level. A Foundation AL1 is approximately equivalent to Standard AL5/AL6 for posting purposes. Students taking Foundation subjects can still be posted to certain secondary schools, but the highest possible stream is Normal (Academic) rather than Express. Taking Foundation level limits access to some school types.
PSLE 2026 written examinations take place in September and October 2026. Results are typically released in late November (approximately 6 weeks after the last paper). The Secondary 1 School Choice Exercise follows immediately after results day, with postings announced in late December 2026. MOE publishes the specific dates on the official MOE website and Parent Gateway closer to the examination period.
